The Silent Cheerleaders: How Women Empowered My Confidence and Style
But one thing I remember vividly is how my mom never let my size define my style. She stitched or picked out the most beautiful dresses for me, ensuring I had variety in my wardrobe. I still recall one dress in particular—a pink and cookie-colored princess-style outfit that I adored. I wore it until it completely faded, despite overhearing whispers like, "Why is she wearing that? that doesn't suit her!"
Those words stuck with me, but they never stopped me from enjoying my dress. Looking back, I sometimes wish my younger self had just 10% of the confidence I have today—I would have cherished that dress even more. But hey, can I expect that level of self-assurance from a 9-year-old?
Fast forward to today, and that same little girl has grown into a woman who carries herself with confidence in a world that often tries to shrink her.
Fashion, Judgment & My Transformation
I’ve always loved long dresses, skirts, and gowns. But at the same time, I adore sarees and traditional Indian outfits too. No matter what I wear, though, I’ve noticed the same pattern—people look, and people comment.
At one point, I started to feel self-conscious. I convinced myself that maybe I should hide behind oversized clothes, that I should dress to "blend in" rather than stand out. But over time, I learned to overcome those negative thoughts with a bright smile and the confidence I carry within me.
But let’s be real—one negative glance or an offhand remark can shatter even the strongest mindset. It happened to me. I started doubting myself again, slipping back into the trap of self-criticism.
The Compliment That Changed Everything
And then, something beautiful happened.
One day, a female colleague of mine said something simple yet powerful:
"You look so confident. You carry yourself in those dresses so well. Your smile is the cherry on top!"
That moment changed everything.
More and more women around me started saying the same thing. Their words reassured me that I was never the problem—my self-doubt was.
The Power of Feminine Energy
I realized something crucial: when a woman compliments you, believe her. Because more often than not, she sees something in you that you may not see in yourself.
This confidence, this ability to embrace my body and my fashion choices, is something I owe to the incredible women in my life. My mom, my Aai, has played a massive role in this. She still stitches dresses for me, encouraging me to experiment with style, to wear what I love, and to walk with confidence.
And beyond my mom, I’ve been surrounded by an incredible circle of strong, supportive women. They have been my silent cheerleaders—the ones who uplift, empower, and remind me that confidence is the best thing a woman can wear.
To every woman who has ever uplifted another: Thank you.
To my silent cheerleaders: Thank you for believing in me even when I doubted myself.
To every girl out there who feels unsure about what she wears, how she looks, or who she is: You are more than enough. Walk with confidence, and the world will follow.
